Sijo on a Moonless Walk

A pre-dawn moonless morning, the temple path scarcely visible,
in my eyes nothing but dark, I ease forward into the woods,
letting the dirt beneath my feet whisper the way to me.

The moon is full tonight, having swallowed all of April.
Swollen with the rays of the sun, it shines in our darkness.
Taking in the light of our eyes, it gives us back our poetry.

Darkness comes. To days, to men, to years, to Kings who are not kings.
But darkness is nothing without Light. It exists to be transcended.

The blackness of night blazes, emptiness filled with endless stars
Dancing their elegant patterns, in vast, eonic waves.
All this I behold, seated, reverential, my two eyes closed.
